ROMAN ARMOUR: RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONQUEST OF THE ANCIENT WORLD.

he Internet provides access to many interesting sites and to information which is not available to the general public. However, there is little electronic material on the topic of Roman Armour. The site by David Pearson called LORICAE ROMANAE is a set of innovative web pages which aims to rectify this problem by presenting images and information about the construction, decoration and function of Imperial cuirasses of the first two centuries A.D. This site also looks at the expansion of the Roman Empire by military means, which resulted in the conquest of most of the 'known' world. And the role of armour which was fundamental in this conquest, playing a significant role in the success of the Roman armies on the battlefield.

This site also examines the problems in dealing with the different types of evidence, by citing both sculpture and archaeological materials. As a result of this, a large collection of quality images of both Roman sculpture and excavated artefacts have been provided. The text and accompaning images are directed towards people who are interested in learning more about the classical world. The project has been produced for the course called Publishing on the World Wide Web which is currently on offer at the Department of Art History at the Australian National University.
