The Alcoves of the Mesa Verde
The cliff walls of the Mesa Verde Region are predominantly sandstone, which is a very porous material, meaning that water and moisture can seep through it. In the winter, this moisture freezes and expands, causing some of the sandstone wall to break away. After a great deal of time, much of the wall has collapsed - leaving the protected alcoves that the Anasazi took advantage of.
