Second Prize - in the Canberra competition went to Eliel Saarinen, who had won a competition in 1904 for the design of the central railway station at Helsinki. His plan for the capital was highly geometrical, but ignored the subtle slopes of the valley. Some of Eliel Saarinen's designs are listed below.
Third prize - went to Professor Agache, from Paris who received the award of 500 pounds. Agache's plan was rigid, paying little attention to the topography, while its national area is boxed in by gas works, government factories, cold storage buildings, railway marshalling yards, and a cemetery.
Or miss it all and return to the HOMEPAGE.
