Panoramas
If the 18th century invented the large, wrap-around painted
panorama, then there are plenty of broad views of Rome to
help our studies:
- Maarten van Heemskerck, panorama of Rome from
Monte Caprino, of the 1530s. In Berlin? cf. Huelsen & Egger
1913-16;
- Series Italie a vol d'oiseau (with one of Piazza
del Popolo lithograph coloured by A. Guesdon), circa 1860;
- Roma veduta a volo d'ucello, anon print c.1850; cf.
Bibl. Ist.Naz Arch. St. dell'Arte Roma XI, 42, tav 66;
reproduced in Ciucci, p.120;
- panorama of the Quirinal Hill. Fresco in Lateran Palace,
1588. Reproduced in Gamrath 1987, fig.85;
For the history of the panorama, cf. van Eekelen 1996; for a much
fuller treatment, cf. Oettermann 1997;
